What is the dream feed?

A dream feeding is basically the last feeding of the day. It usually occurs between 2 and 3 hours after your bedtime feeding, right around the time you go to sleep. This will likely shift the last planned feed of the day, allowing him to have a longer stretch of sleep around the time that you are going to bed. This feeding usually takes place between 9:00 and 10:30pm.

What happens if my baby has a short sleep time at night?

Great question! Dream feeds won’t lengthen your sleep, they just shift it. If you aren’t seeing longer stretches at night, there is a class I can teach that will help. My newborn class will teach you how to encourage longer stretches during the newborn stage.

Is it possible for all babies?

The dream feed is not always a reality. You can try my tips for dream feeds and give it 5-7 days to see if you like it. Keep going! Don’t let yourself get discouraged. These are some scenarios where the dream feed may not be right for you. I recommend that you drop it.

This feeding interrupts deep sleep, making it difficult to get back to sleep.

The dream feed does not seem to make any difference. The dream feed doesn’t seem to make any difference. These babies will still wake up at the same time, regardless of whether they have the dream feed.

How do I offer a dream feeding to my child?

You should aim to give one more meal before you go to sleep. After the last feeding, take your child out of his crib or bassinet and give him another full meal. It’s as easy as that.

Do it if she requires a diaper change. Keep him swaddled if he is able to take a good feed while being swaddled. He can be unwaddled if he is hungry and needs to be fed. It’s fine if he wakes up. Many babies awaken during feedings. That’s okay. You can keep your lights dimmed and the stimulation at a minimum.

My baby loves the dreamfeed! What length would you recommend it being kept?

Imagine that your baby is dreaming up a dream feed. Perfect. It’s fine to stop offering it. It can be stopped if it stops working. Some babies will continue to receive this feed until they reach 9 months, while others may stop it at that age.
